Police confirmed the gunman's dead body was found hours after the attack just a few hundred meters away. Swiss authorities were careful not to initially link the mosque attack with the dead body found nearby, till receiving sufficient evidence from the investigation. According to Nick Cumming-Bruce and Jack Ewing of the New York Times, "Officials described the [gunman] as a 24-year-old Swiss citizen of Ghanaian descent, but they did not identify him by name... [stating] that he was already wanted for the fatal stabbing of a friend whose body was found on Sunday at a playground in Zurich."

Zurich canton police informed the public that the gunman apparently took his own life. Officials made it clear the gunman did not appear to have connections with any terror organizations. At this time, the gunman's motivation remains unknown.
